MarketMeter Insights Lunch featuring Livewire buy-side panels (2024)

MarketMeter’s inaugural Insights Lunch was held at Fishburners (Level 2, 11 York Street, Wynyard) on December 3, 2024. It brought together ASX-listed corporate executives and the investment community to hear presentations informed by MarketMeter’s Institutional Investor Sentiment Research. Livewire Markets moderated two buy-side panels featuring prominent equities fund managers to discuss the most important issues in the markets.

Panel One discussed the following topics in the context of Australian equities:

1. Ageing population and the risks and opportunities it creates
2. Digital innovation and AI
3. Public versus private markets – focused on the public side but with reference to the impact private markets are having
4. Economic regime change – inflation, rates, GDP growth

Panel Two panellists nominated which stocks they believed excelled in the following corporate performance areas and why. These categories were ranked as the most important to fund managers in MarketMeter’s institutional investor sentiment research:

1. Effectiveness of CEO
2. Execution of Strategy
3. Credibility
4. Earnings Quality
5. Sustainable Competitive Advantage

Questions were also posed based on the research looking at issues such as institutional investor attitudes to management and corporate strategies.

Panellist Biographies

Jun Bei Liu is the Portfolio Manager of Tribeca’s Alpha Plus Fund. Since taking over sole responsibility for managing the Fund, she has quadrupled AUM to over $1.1bn, making it one of the largest long short equity funds in the Australian market. She is a passionate, motivated, and dedicated investment manager having built an 18-year career at Tribeca, starting as an equity analyst in 2005 and spending several years as a Portfolio Manager, before taking over the Alpha Plus Fund in 2019. She is a prolific contributor to Australia’s financial services sector and enjoys sharing her knowledge and love for markets with investors.

Hugh Giddy, Senior Portfolio Manager and Head of Investment Research at Investors Mutual Limited, is co-Portfolio Manager of the flagship Australian Share Fund and is Portfolio Manager of the Concentrated Australian Share Fund. In his role as Head of Research, Hugh is the custodian of IML’s ‘quality and value’ investment philosophy, modernising investment processes as required, while ensuring the philosophy and client outcomes remain unchanged.

Hugh has extensive investment experience in equities. Hugh founded Cannae Capital Partners in 2007 which merged into IML in early 2010, when Hugh joined the IML investment team. Prior to IML, Hugh worked with the investment team at Orbis Global in London. He moved to Sydney to work for Platinum Asset Management followed by Perennial Value Management, in both instances from early days to material success. Hugh has an M. Phil Economics from Cambridge, having completed a BCom (Hons) and BSc.

Kirsty Mackay-Fisher is a Deputy Portfolio Manager at WaveStone Capital with over 20 years financial markets experience. Kirsty is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), holds a Master of Commerce in Advanced Finance, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance & Investment, and a Bachelor of Science.

Kirsty commenced her career in financial markets in 2001 working for Berkley Group (now Centric Wealth) as an Equity Analyst. She moved into stock broking in 2005 as an Infrastructure Analyst for BBY before joining J.P. Morgan in 2006 where she became a highly rated Senior Infrastructure Analyst within the Australian Equities team. Kirsty moved into funds management in 2014, joining Arete Investment Partners as an Investment Analyst covering mid-small capitalization companies before joining WaveStone Capital in 2018.

Kerry Series is the founder and a major shareholder of NorthStar Impact, where he is responsible for overseeing the portfolio management and research into impact stocks. Kerry co-founded Perennial Investment Partners, which achieved strong investment performance and reached $20 billion in assets under management within eight years. The equity funds managed by Kerry at Perennial were consistently highly ranked.

Kerry was Head of Asia Pacific Equities at AMP Capital where he was responsible for approximately $5 billion of assets, and was an Investment Director for HSBC Asset Management. He has a Bachelor of Science (Economics), is a Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) and holds a UK Securities Industry Diploma. In 2018, he completed the Impact Measurement program at Oxford University.

Andy Forster, Senior Investment Officer at Argo Investments, joined Argo in 2010 as an Investment Analyst and was promoted to Senior Investment Officer in 2015. Andy has over 20 years experience as an analyst and portfolio manager. Prior to joining the Company, Andy was a founding partner and portfolio manager at boutique fund manager, Cannae Capital.

Andy’s experience also includes portfolio manager positions at Deutsche Asset Management, State Street Global Advisors and as an equities analyst at Westpac Investment Management. Andy is a CFA charter holder and has completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons). He is also a Graduate of the AICD Company Directors Course.

Elise Kennedy, Investment Analyst at Schroders, covers ASX-listed stocks across the technology, healthcare providers/logistics, small cap general retail and office property trusts sectors. Elise was previously at Jarden Research where she was Director, Head of Technology, Equity Research. Prior to this she spent seven years with Morgan Stanley in a variety of equity research and sales and trading roles, including covering sectors such as telecommunications, media, technology and gaming.

Elise earned the #1 ranking in sectors on both the Peter Lee and Asia Institutional Investor (II) surveys. In addition to Elise’s professional background, she also founded the “Jarden: Talking Tech” podcast on Spotify.” Elise has a Bachelor of Business from UTS with a High Distinction average and an MBA from the AGSM at the UNSW Business School with Excellence. She is an active volunteer with Shine for Kids.
